If students are not trained to ask basic questions about the images which confront them, if they are not asked to examine the knowledge and assumptions which they already possess, they are being denied the opportunity to develop the most simple and essential critical tools.
Bio/Short Description
Dr. Ulla Carlsson is professor in media and communication research at the University of Gothenburg since 2006. She is the former Director of NORDICOM, founder of the journal Nordicom Review, the Nordicom Book Series, and the International Clearinghouse on Children, Youth and Media. In 2015 she was appointed to the UNESCO Chair on Freedom of Expression, Media Development and Global Policy at the University of Gothenburg. Ulla Carlsson has published several books on freedom of expression; media development; safety of journalists; media statistics; media history; media governance; media and information literacy (MIL); etc. She has been a member of the board of several international research organizations and committees, and also on the editorial board of leading journals in the field. She has acted as expert to UNESCO, UN, EU, Nordic Council of Ministers, the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO, the Swedish Government and a number of different authorities. Ulla Carlsson was honored in the anniversary publication 60 Women Contributing to the 60 Years of UNESCO. Constructing the Foundation of Peace (UNESCO, Paris 2006).She has been appointed honorary doctor by Tampere University 2014 and by Lund University 2015.
